What is SST PURE shaft alignment?

Golf is a game of precision and inches. Top expert club fitters focus on dialing in proper golf shaft flex, weight, profile, and length coupled with the right swing weight, lie, loft, and grip.

Even after going through an extensive fitting for custom clubs there are still bound to be irregularities within newly purchased equipment caused by tolerances within the manufacturing process.

These irregularities especially within a golf shaft can cause off-line bending and twisting of the golf shaft during the golf swing leading to wider shot dispersion patterns and higher scores.

What is SST Pure?

Imagine you are an expert club fitter using the same exact golf shafts for each of your clients. Hopefully, your club fitter doesn’t use the same shafts for each client! But if you took the time and evaluate each golf shaft you’ll find very few of them will weigh exactly the same or have exactly the same measurements.

Each golf shaft will have a hard side and a soft side, a thick side and a thin side, a flat side and a round side. All these irregularities are just a function of the manufacturing process.

This is where SST PURE Technology comes in!

SST PURE [Plane of Uniform REpeatability] Shaft Alignment System, analyses the structure of any shaft and locates most stable orientation of any golf shaft to minimize off-line bending and twisting.

What does Puring a shaft do?

The SST PURE process identifies asymmetries within golf shafts, identifying the most stable position of the shaft also known as the neutral axis. With the stable position identified it enables better consistency of performance in the golf club.

Having the neutral axis identified is going to help your golf ball travel on the intended line and trajectory assuming your golf swing is doing its job to square up the club head at impact.

What does a SST PURE Report look like?

A typical pureing process report comes in two sections.

The first is the Load Symmetry Index Test which analyzes the shaft’s structure. An index reading of 100 across the board would mean the golf shaft is perfectly straight and perfectly round, unfortunately no such shaft exists and only certain sides of modern shafts are close to perfectly straight and perfectly round.

The second section of the report highlights the movement of the shaft tip at impact. The red section of the below chart reflects the performance of the shaft in the logo up position or an unPURE’d shaft. The green section reflects the results after the SST PURE process or finding the most round and straight side of the shaft.

You can see that the vertical deviation improves from 3.079 to 0.497 stabilizing the shaft by almost 84%! And these results are not atypically, most clubs will see an improvement of 60-80% over the standard logo up position.

Does SST PURE make a difference?

Independent studies have shown a golf club assembled using SST PURE will provide more consistency and a softer feel. As well as provide more distance and accuracy to each golf shot as compared to a randomly installed shaft, the current norm in the club making process.

With higher handicappers the answer becomes a bit foggier. Sure the nominal cost won’t break the bank especially if you’re only SST PUREing your metal woods, but the money would be better invested in lessons that fundamentally improve the consistency of your swing before improving the consistency of your equipment.
